Yesterday, February 9, 2012, I attended the best show of my life (so far).
It started off slow, as Richmond native Joe Threat failed to carry a crowd with such intensity. As ASAP and his crew were running late, the crowd grew anxious and boo'ed Threat off the stage, throwing drinks, and other objects on the stage. He exited stage left, with a middle finger to the hating crowd.

After Joe Threat was disrespected, ASAP was no where to be found. He later apologized for his absence, and proceeded to start off his set with "Pretty Flocko". Then after "Brand New Guy" everyone was hype and he jumped into the crowd, as I supported him, trying to take a picture. After that, he preformed "Purple Swag", the house was sold-out, and packed, he asked the crowd for an "L", and proceed to get high while he preformed "Get Lit". Before that he asked for a lighter, and lighters just began flying in the air as he remarked, "I only asked for one!".

After that song, the whole crowd was either blazed from rotation in the audience, or a contact from hundreds of kush being smoked in the room. Some dude passed me a J, and we were just jammin and rotating it around until it was spent. That is about when I forget was songs were being played, and bright lights and loud bass clouded my mind. Girls were sexier than ever, I got countless grinds, for the whole 3 hrs there was many chicks infront of me moving their hips. At the end, the DJ faked out the crowd, saying how he forgot to bring "Peso", and as ASAP and his crew left the stage, and the DJ began to pack up...

Asap jumped in the crowd, and performed "Peso" right in front of me on the crowd's level. Moshing began as members of the audience jumped, and crowd surfed, feet were flying everywhere. My friend got his glasses knocked off, face cut, and glasses smashed. I grabbed one of ASAP's braids as he swung them in my direction. I elbowed a dude in the head as she stumbled down, girls were making out with each other....Crazy.

After the last song Peso, instead of leaving the stage, the ASAP crew played older songs like Clipse's "Grindin'" to continue to hype mood. He asked, "Can I party with ya'll?" And jumped back in the crowd and it got live! In the midst of this confusion, someone took ASAP's "Funeral" snapback, and he stopped partying and yelled, "Who took my Mother F*cking Hat?!" The guy who took it, gradually came forward, as ASAP snatched it from him, and continued to jam until he left the stage.

I don't even have to write a conclusion. ASAP Rocky knows how to carry a show. If you have a chance to go to one in the future, GO!!s

"Young Adult" Review

I saw two movies over the last few days. One of them was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and the other was, obviously, Young Adult. I pretty much knew what I was going to get with M:I. Tom Cruise and his respectable-actor friends in an extremely large-scale action movie. With Young Adult, I really should have known what I was getting into. The director is Jason Reitman. I'm familiar with Up in the Air, Thank You For Smoking, and Juno. The writer, also from the Juno team, is Diablo Cody. She also writes - and is creator of - The U.S. of Tara, more work I'm familiar with. I'm a big fan of that show. One of the co-stars in it is Patton Oswalt so I've been getting increasingly familiar with his dramatic work, and I've seen his comedy here and there. The last piece is Charlize Theron. She's been in quite a few movies, even though she's slowed down in recent years, and I've seen my fair share of her films. Between that and Turbo's mild obsession with her, I can safely say I'm familiar with Charlize Theron. So, by all accounts, I should have been ready for Young Adult... so why wasn't I?

In the beginning of the movie we see Mavis Gary (Theron) in her everyday life. She guzzles Diet Coke, enjoys the perks of single life, and leaves her TV on E! almost 24/7. The only mildly interesting thing she's got going on is that she's the writer of a formerly popular book series for teens. In a desperate search for inspiration on the final novel in the series, she sifts through emails and finds the announcement of a newborn baby from her high school flame. You'll possibly recognize Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) as Nite Owl II from Watchmen. He's a hell of a lot cooler in this movie. Buddy and Mavis have some history as high school sweet hearts and Mavis plans on refreshing their twenty-year-expired relationship in an attempt to add some much needed excitement to her life. She leaves Minneapolis (a.k.a. The Mini-Apple) for her hometown of Mercury and greets her ol' stomping grounds with general disgust. It becomes obvious pretty quickly that she's the best thing to ever come out of that town. Matt Freehauf (Oswalt) is the embodiment of just how awful Mercury is. First of all he's Patton Oswalt (fat, not particularly attractive) but to make matters worse, he's handicapped. An incident in high school earned him the nickname "Hate Crime Guy" and left him reliant on a cane ever since. I won't ruin his story though. Anyway, she bumps into him at a bar and their mutual enjoyment of booze leads to an odd friendship between people who are opposites in about every other sense.

Once Mavis sinks her teeth into Buddy, she doesn't let go. Matt tries to talk sense into her throughout the movie but she is dead set on freeing her Ex-beau from his unhappy marriage. It just so happens that he's not really unhappy. Now with this much info, you can probably guess what problems are sure to follow. I'm here to insure you that you are wrong. They could have gone obvious with this. They could have made Buddy and his choice between his family and Mavis the focus of the climax of this movie, but Reitman and Cody avoid this mistake. Instead, they stick to their protagonist and make her so much more complex than she originally seems. I found myself trying to understand why I couldn't hate Mavis. On the surface it would seem that her being the protagonist in a comedy protects her from being disliked but as we dig deeper, we find the sympathy comes from somewhere much more real. Everyone who sees the movie won't relate to being the popular kid from school, but we all experience some sense of attachment to our past. For some it's positive and we long to enjoy our high school years again. For others, the past is at the root of present problems. Both sides of the spectrum are explored in Young Adult. They clash and combine wonderfully for a fresh collection of interactions. This movie oozes authenticity. Diablo Cody's writing creates a relatable experience by scrapping eloquence and classic 'wit' in favor of unrefined, crude profanity one might hear in real conversation. Somehow it manages to be smart with stupid people and no one's the wiser. It's difficult to explain but a real treat to witness.

Young Adult is a movie that's hard to stop thinking about, like it has an aftertaste. The whole movie is Diet Coke. It's like a classic, everything in place. It's got the Academy Award nominated director, the Academy Award winning actress & writer, and a general air of success all around it. However, it's a little too off for the mainstream. It might not be exciting enough or hilarious enough for the masses so it takes a specific taste. Like our protagonist and her cola, it's possible that some will be inexplicably addicted to this brand of film. And honestly, those who can learn to appreciate this may be better off than someone who won't deviate from the original formula. I've gotta say, I'm pretty proud of that analogy. I'm giving Young Adult 3 Stars. It would be 4 but I don't feel like photoshopping this image.

"The Descendants" Review

Long time no type I guess. Sorry to all the loyal readers out there but I've been pretty busy with school lately. It's crunch time so there have been essays due and tests to study for and that won't be letting up for another week or so. Over my Thanksgiving break I managed to schedule in something I actually wanted to do. Sunday night, before getting back to the grind, Turbo and I went and saw The Descendants. It's a new film by Sideways director, Alexander Payne, starring George Clooney. The story is set in Hawaii where Matt King (Clooney) has been burdened with the responsibility of caring for his children alone after his wife is in a boating accident and falls into a coma. In the movie the doctors reveal that she won't be waking up and King has to start informing his family and friends, while guiding his children through the challenges that come with such a tragedy. In addition to this, he finds his wife was cheating on him (it's in the trailer so I don't think that's a spoiler) and he takes it upon himself to find out as much as he can about his wife's lover.

Alexander Payne said in a recent interview that he finds the setting of a story to be just as important as the story itself. The fact that The Descendants takes place in Hawaii means a lot. For one, it means we get plenty of shots of the beautiful archipelago. The King family are the descendants of King Kamehameha himself. In the film, Matt and his cousins are trying to decide what to do with all of their land. Matt, being the sole trustee, has final say on what is to be done with the land. Matt King's independent wealth along with his connections take us from island to island to see the crystal clear beaches, miles of sandy coastline, and green jungles and grasses (jungles and grasses that his cousins propose they sell to hotel builders). The setting also means we get a look at a life that many of us probably don't consider. If someone tells you they're from Salt Lake City or Seattle, you probably just assume it's shitty there like it is wherever you live. But if someone says they're from Hawaii, we get this idea of some amazing exotic life where everyone's kicking back 24/7. The movie immediately attacks this notion and never lets up. They've got all the same problems over there as we do here in the mainland. They need lawyers and real estate agents. They have in-laws who hate them and annoying neighbors. The only difference is that they can usually count on the weather being nice. The score in the film is another huge factor in allowing the setting to come to life. Hawaiian music is heard all over the place. At the end of the credits we couldn't even pronounce the names of the majority of pieces. I'm just glad no one who spoke traditional Hawaiian was there to hear us butchering their language.

Matt's big surface problem throughout the movie is that he doesn't know how to deal with his two daughters, Scottie (10-years-old) and Alexandra (17). He refers to himself as the "backup" parent in the movie. When Scottie is first introduced, she's in trouble for showing her classmates disturbing pictures of her comatose mother in school. Alex is away at a private school originally and when Matt and Scottie go to pick her up on a whim, she's out golfing drunk with a friend. It suffices to say, there's a lot on Matt's plate as he begins the "single parent" era of his life. The characters allude to a dark past for Alex but she seems to be a bit more on the ball now. Matt counts on her to accompany him to break the bad news to their relatives. She's also his main support system in finding out that his wife was unfaithful to him. Shailene Woodley (pictured above) is spectacular as Alexandra. I don't watch a lot of The Secret Life of the American Teenager so I had never heard of her before but she really impressed me. I wouldn't be surprised if she got some recognition from the Academy; at least for a supporting role. Judy Greer (Arrested Development, Archer) and Matthew Lillard (Scream, Scooby-Doo) contribute solid performances. Honestly, everyone does a great job pulling together for believable interactions. It's so easy to rely on someone like George Clooney to carry a film but Payne allowed him to work without the entire project living or dying by his presence. This was, without a doubt, the right way to go.

Sharp dialogue, dense characters, genuine laughs, and some heartfelt exchanges are all wrapped up into one intriguing narrative. The execution is perfect even if no one aspect or scene jumps out as absolutely fantastic or completely unexpected. I don't think you can go wrong with spending your cash on The Descendants. If you're looking for something to watch this holiday season that isn't geared towards children, I suggest you look this up. I'm giving The Descendants 5 Dancing Hula Dolls. Chyeah!

50/50 Review

This is really kinda late, but no one else posted this and I have to write a review for a film in current release for a class anyway so I decided to post this.

We all know the saying, "You have to laugh to keep from crying." I have a feeling that this sentiment, along with the fact that this was a true story, was one of the main inspirations for this film. 50/50 tells the story of a likeable 20-something guy named Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who finds out, pretty much out of the blue, that he has cancer and his odds are 50/50. He's stunned. He runs, he eats well, and has always refrained from smoking. How could a young, healthy guy like that get cancer? Well, shit happens. His relief is his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogan). While Kyle tries to keep it together and act tough for the both of them, you can tell he's hurting inside. Adam's other relief is his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), but she proves herself to be not so trustworthy and Adam breaks up with her. Immediately afterwards, Kyle adopts the attitude that Adam could use his cancer to pick up dates.

When Adam isn't spending time with Kyle, he's either getting his weekly chemo treatments with two of the hippest old guys on the block, Alan and Mitch (Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer) or he's seeing the hospital-appointed psychiatrist Katherine (Ana Kendrick). It is during these meetings with Katherine that we begin to see Adam's true feelings about his disease. He's aloof at first, bu the more the innocent and inexperienced doctor probes, the more he reveals his fears. These scenes during their meetings are some of the best in the film, and some of the most honest scenes in recent cinema.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt does an outstanding job as Adam. If he isn't nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Oscars it will be a crime. He does such a great job of conveying all the different emotions that Adam is going through. Seth Rogan is his usual self when he's being funny, but he has a couple of serious moments as well and pulls them off beautifully. Ana Kendrick is as cute and charming as any actress I've ever seen. Anjelica Huston plays Adam's neurotic mother with the skills that only a seasoned actress like herself could pull off. Her neurosis is not without cause, either. Not only does her son have cancer, but her husband (Serge Houde) has Alzheimer's.

The most wonderful aspect of this film is that it perfectly blends drama with comedy. I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I went in to see the film. Knowing that Seth Rogan was a big part of it and that the story was based off of his best friend and writer of the film, Will Reiser, who had cancer and beat it. I was unsure if they would be able to balance the drama and the comedy, or if it would turn out to be a run-of-the-mill Seth Rogan comedy. My fears were dashed, however, because 50/50 is just as funny as it is heartfelt and I can't remember a film in recent memory that's like that. If there are any cliches in the film, and I counted few, the superb acting, the skillful direction, smart screenplay, and the onscreen chemistry between all of the characters more than makes up for them. One of the best films I've seen all year. CHYEAH!

Audio, Video, Disco Review

lot has happened to me musically since 2007 when Justice's first album, †, was released. For one, I didn't listen to Justice. I didn't listen to much of anything to be honest outside of hip-hop and R&B. In 2009 I was introduced to Daft Punk and later on, Justice. House quickly became one of my favorite genres and † set the bar for what I was looking for in all electronic music. Two years later, Justice has finally released their sophomore record, Audio, Video, Disco and this is my review.

The album starts with a track called "Horsepower." As it's name suggests, this piece gets the album going strong. It hits you with the dirty sound you've come to love and expect from Justice and lifts the spirits for this album to be more of the same from this group. In some cases, that would be a bad thing. However, when it comes to Justice, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has just been craving more from them. The next track is the first single from AVD entitled "Civilization." Justice introduces some vocals this time but the formula is still pretty much the same. By the time you get into "Ohio" you kinda get the sense that this is a more watered down version of Justice. If this is your first time getting into House music or just this band, you might find this easier to attach to. Of course, I'm always an advocate of diving right into a group's best or first so I'd still recommend †. I have to admit though, I love "Canon." It reminds me of Human After All era Daft Punk the way it repeats the same riffs over and over until you care about them.

By the time "On'n'On" finished, I realized how much I prefer the vocals on †. The childlike sounds of "D.A.N.C.E." and whatever you wanna call Uffie in "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy" have been replaced with the airy, high-pitched male vocals that are so popular these days. "Parade" starts with some strong base but never really goes anywhere. It'll certainly attract the dance fans though. By "Newlands," I was thinking to myself "hey, this is really different?" I didn't even realize it but the direction on AVD is just completely different. It sounds a little more rock-influenced. Pitchfork claims it's prog-rock influenced and I guess I can hear it but I didn't pick that up for myself. They get paid for this shit though, right? I'm doin' this for the love of you people. Anyway, back on topic. "Helix" is kinda what I expected this whole album to sound like. It's still more conventional dance music but it has a Justice tinge. I dig it, and that's as good of a compliment it'll get. AVD finishes with a title track. This was also released as a single so anyone who cares has probably already formed opinions about it. I prefer closing tracks to be a surprise when I first listen to an album but hey, who cares what I want? I'm just a potential customer. My opinions on this song pretty much summarize the whole project. I like it, I don't love it. Will I listen to it again? Definitely. If Justice wants to tour around here I'll definitely try to get into the show. To be honest, I expected to be disappointed but I'm really not. Audio, Video, Disco is a solid album and it shows Justice isn't just some fad who made some mediocre music that crowds attached to. They're serious and I'm fully expecting to be impressed by whatever they release next.

I'm giving Audio, Video, Disco a 1985 White Lamborghini Countach. Just one of 'em though. Chyeah!

I'm pretty sure everyone knows who Common is by now. Rapper, actor, activist, and generally cool guy, Common is someone I'd look up to if I was trying to get famous. Common has been gaining respect in the rap game since 1992. His last album, 2008's Universal Mind Control was a disappointment. His upcoming album, The Dreamer, The Believer, on the other hand is shaping up to be one of the best rap albums of the year in this writer's opinion. I posted the first single, "Ghetto Dreams," recently and the second single continues to deliver satisfying, conventional hip-hop. Blue Sky features classic Common vocals. In a rap world ruled by metaphors and double entendres in every line, Common takes it back to the 90s (again) with a more straight forward style of rhyming. The production is flawless and No I.D. is to thank for that. Listen for yourself. I'll be waiting patiently for it to get the radio play it deserves.

In addition to a new album, I learned last night that Common is going to be one of the stars in the upcoming AMC series, Hell on Wheels. The title refers to the world surrounding the building of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s. Common is playing a recently freed slave in the series and has been giving 2nd to top billing, not bad. I'm a little weary of his acting talents. He hasn't really had all that much responsibility as an actor in anything that turned out good. That's not to say he ruined anything though, Just Wright was probably screwed from the get go. I guess when the series premieres on November 6th, we'll have a good indication of his acting chops. TV acting isn't as demanding as film acting so he should be alright. The farthest off of Common's known projects is his collaborative album with equally-skilled rapper, Nas. Apparently after "Ghetto Dreams" the two decided to record a full LP that they're calling Nas.Com. Get it? I don't see any reason that album shouldn't be absolutely fantastic. Whenever it comes to light (currently scheduled for some time in 2012), I'm sure it will put all of these pop-minded, radio friendly rappers to shame.

That's all I wanted to say. November could be the month where Common becomes a household name. I've been a fan of his since Be in 2005. He's worked with some of the greats in the entertainment industry from J. Dilla to Ridley Scott. He's earned the love his new show and album may very well get him. This post is just me saying good luck & fingers crossed. Chyeah!

Some Assembly Required

That tagline was the worst part of the first Avengers trailer. You know, the one that you saw after watching all of the credits for Captain America. Today Marvel released the newest trailer for the fast approaching comic-movie epic. Before I say anything else, here's the link:As you can see, this movie looks fucking awesome. I'm going to go ahead and give it the "most entertaining movie of the year: 2012" award. As good as Batman and Spider-Man might be, neither of them can match the amount of fan service this movie is going to have. Just watching the trailer makes all of my hopes about what this movie can be come alive. This might sound odd but I hope this movie turns out to be like 2 and half hours long. That way they can take their time building it up and letting things happen, not throwing a bunch of whatnot together. Hey, if Transformers can make a billion dollars off a movie that long, I don't see any reason to avoid it.My favorite parts of the trailer include any scene with Iron Man (in armor, not just Stark) and the ending where they show of some Mark Ruffalo Hulk. I'm interested in seeing what he brings to the role. I'd like to see more Hawkeye in a future trailer. I don't know if movies do Character Trailers like games do but they'd be great for this movie. They could even use old footage for the characters that have it. I just want substantial amounts of Hawkeye.I don't really have anything else to say. It was just a trailer after all. But yeah, explosions, Loki, what looked to be some Cap vs. Thor, Nick Fury finally getting his hands dirty, RDJ being funny, Scarlett Johannson being hot. These are the things we have to look forward to. Just imagine all the things we haven't seen yet. May can't come soon enough. Chyeah!

63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, I am disappoint.

The Emmys happened yesterday and I missed them because I was watching football. If I weren't watching football, I would have been annoyed watching all of my favorite shows and actors get overshadowed for awards. So thank you Fox for interrupting Animation Domination to have Jane Lynch stomp on my hopes.

The disappointment goes back to last week when it was revealed that Adventure Time lost to some Disney thing for the Short-Form Animation award. That's two nominations and two losses in two years. I have confidence that they'll get what they've earned eventually. The only high point comes in the form of Mad Men winning it's 4th consecutive Outstanding Drama Series award. I'm kinda surprised Breaking Bad didn't get the nomination considering it's praise. I guess Boardwalk Empire just swooped in and took it's spot. While I'm excited that Mad Men is getting recognition, I was hoping this would be the year that Jon Hamm got his own personal Emmy for his portrayal of Don Draper. As a matter of fact, not one of the Mad Men actors walked away with their own Emmy last night. I guess the academy just thinks they work best as a team. Maybe next year.

I'll admit that I don't watch many of the shows nominated so maybe the performances that are winning truly are streets ahead of my favorites. That being said, I simply cannot stand for the atrocities going on in the Comedy department. Glee has an Emmy nomination. I've watched 1 full episode of Glee. Not only is the singing annoying, but the acting leaves much to be desired. If you didn't get my "streets ahead" reference, I would have preferred a nomination for Community. More than that though, Louie deserves the nomination! Actually, Louie deserves the win. He did get nominated for acting in the show, writing on the show, and for his stand-up, Hilarious, but he lost for all of those. I'm pretty much shocked. I'm going to let it slide because they were reviewing the first season. If the show isn't given a nomination Outstanding Comedy Series next year, there will be hell to pay. Just as a side note to this, Jim Parsons does a good job in The Big Bang Theory, but I don't think he's consecutive Emmy good.

Other various Emmy disappointments include (try not to take these too seriously):

iCarly losing it's award. What?
The continued existence of Reality Show awards.
Modern Family (good show) getting 5 awards (not that good).

Drive Review

This is one of those instances where it's a good idea to watch a movie based on reviews. Actually, that's usually a good idea if you like good movies. What I mean is, I didn't know much about Drive before the last few weeks. I knew Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan were in it. I knew driving was involved. And I knew the director, Nicolas Winding Refn, was a foreign guy with whom's work I'd not been acquainted (I'd heard of Bronson but haven't seen it). About last week the reviews started coming in and they were great. Not like The Social Network good or anything but it was obvious that this was something I needed to see. Pslightly Psycho and I set it up and now it's been watched. I have to say, it did not disappoint.

I haven't been paying attention to the advertisements for this movie but I can assure you that they're deceiving. Drive runs like what I'd assume a 20 lap NASCAR race would go. The first 15 laps would be significant. Not necessarily exciting (depending on whether or not you like NASCAR), but important. Everything takes it's time getting into position for the big finish. We meet the characters, understand the relationships, and are treated to the beauty of Los Angeles along the way. In the last 5 laps, shit gets serious. Now we've got the passing and the crashing, or rather, chases and gunfights. Neither one is overdone. They're really only used to contribute to the seriousness of the matters at hand. If you were expecting some Shoot 'Em Up-esque car fighting movie, you're going to be surprised. Drive is stylish and serious.

Ryan Gosling plays the nameless Driver. As his name suggests, driving is what he does best. He's a wheelman with a guarantee that he can make any getaway as long as you give him a five minute window. The opening scene treats us with a bit of his skill. He daylights as a Hollywood stunt driver and mechanic. These, of course, would be the jobs he tells people about, but I saw them as secondary to his midnight crusades. Driver's only friend is Shannon (Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston). He helps Driver with the stunts and is trying to borrow enough money to get Driver in his very own stock car. In the film, Driver takes notice of his neighbor, Irene (Mulligan). Romance blossoms after he helps her and her son, Benicio, out of a jam. Gosling's Driver is a man of very few words so we're left with their facial expressions and body language to demonstrate the chemistry. Usually when you see a quiet character in a love story, it comes off as awkward, but the emotion between these two felt authentic. That comes to a halt when Irene's husband, Standard, is released from jail. He's not a bad guy, but he owes money to a few. When Standard's pursuers threaten Irene & Benicio, Driver decides to contribute his talents to help the family.

Things start getting messy from here in more ways than one. Suddenly, Drive ramps up the intensity and comes out of nowhere with some good old fashioned gore. There's red corn syrup everywhere. The graphic nature of these scenes is a drastic contrast to the first half of the movie but it's all so well done that nothing really seemed out of place. Speaking of well done, the cinematography is perfect. The camera does a great job capturing everything from emotions to bloodshed without ever getting dull. Another high point was the soundtrack. I'm not great with genres but it rooted in electronic, possibly trance. Regardless of the genre, I know I'm going to spend a decent bit of time tracking down the tracks from the film and adding them to my personal music collection. The pacing can be compared to that of Taxi Driver, with a slow build of everything coming together before a heart-pounding final act. And of course, there are a few other obvious comparisons I could make. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see a really good film in theaters. It doesn't quite feel like a "Best Picture" nominee but I wouldn't be surprised. It might be the best movie I've seen in theaters this year (excluding whatever Tree of Life will go down in history as).

but now I'm gonna talk about blogger updates! Blogger is really clean right now. I don't think I've said this before, but this might be too clean. Seriously, this is so clean. My screen is mostly white space. Now usually when a site changes, there's some backlash. However, blogger was always pretty terrible looking. It was clumsy and unattractive. I've yet to experience if the new layout actually works better but it actually looks alright.Ugh, do you guys still want a post about football? I'm gonna do it in bullet form. The NFL just became ridiculous this season. It's like the QBs are playing Madden out there and (like Madden) no one knows how to play defense.

Cam Newton threw for 422 yards. More than any rookie has ever thrown in their opening game. Also, when he did it, 422 yards was 12 yards more than Tom Brady had ever thrown. Peyton Manning has been reincarnated in a black man.
The next day, Tom Brady threw for 517 yards. Apparently he doesn't like when he's on an ESPN list that isn't flattering him. Also, he advertises UGGs for men. Mad gay.
Chad Henne threw for like 416 or something against the Patriots defense and no one cares. Poor Chad Henne. That means the two of them combined had more passing yards than in any other game ever. I told you they're playing Madden out there.
The Saints vs. Packers game... They're playing on "Pro" I guess.
Ryan Fitzgerald had 4 touchdowns... Rex Grossman won a game... Nevermind, they're playing on Rookie.
What else happened? Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez still suck?
Oh, and the Broncos vs. Raiders game. I think there were more yards in penalties than the offenses ever gained. That was a painful game and I had a Taco Bell Chicken Flatbread Sandwich riding on the Broncos. Never trust a Denver team. Ever.

Alright, I just felt like doing that because why not. This year's NFL should have some pretty spectacular highlights. Full of barrel roles and unnecessary celebrations. I purposely didn't mention the Colts or the Eagles. Why? No reason. Well, there are multiple reasons that I don't feel like typing. Mostly because 7 bullet points is all you get for free. Drive review this weekend. Chyeah for some new Rye Cry.

George Lucas is both a genius and an idiot. He gave us one of the most beloved movie series of all time, and he's been fucking with it ever since. These new changes are on the upcoming Blu Ray release of Star Wars. Here's the latest:

1. Darth Vader yells, “No, noooo!” while The Emperor is electrocuting Luke.
2. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Krayt Dragon yell now sounds like a pedophile getting his dick caught in a screen door.
3. The Ewoks blink now.

American Oldboy gets real.

We've been hearing about this American remake of the 2003 Korean film, Oldboy, for a while now. For a while it was rumored to star Will Smith with Steven Spielberg as the director. If you've seen Oldboy, or know what it's about, you're were probably confused about this. I'm not here to speak ill of either of these gentlemen. Personally I think they're some of the best at what they do even if popular opinion is beginning to sway from this opinion. What makes this combo questionable for this particular project is their tendency towards films with mass appeal. Not that they're not capable of producing deep non-blockbusters, but these are guys with names that immediately skyrocket a movie to #1 in the box office. That being said, Oldboy is a film that is going to have some trouble connecting with an American audience. It would be more than interesting to see Spielberg & Smith try, but I'm glad they're not.

Now the burden of Americanizing a modern foreign classic falls on the shoulders of Spike Lee. I, admittedly, haven't seen many Spike Lee movies. I plan on changing that in the near future. From what I know of his work, he's got some talent. Usually his work deals with race relations in America though, so I'm somewhat worried about how qualified he is to take on a project completely out of his zone. For a while I thought he'd just twist the movie into something dealing more with race. I fully expected a black actor to be chosen as the lead role. However, it was just announced that Josh Brolin will be the star. Even though I'm not looking forward to the movie, I think Brolin's a good choice. He's got the chops and I can see him in the role.

So far his Brolin's casting is the shining light of this remake. I wish we'd stop this trend of remaking foreign films that aren't even old. How about letting people who care to see those movies seek them out and read some subtitles? Hopefully this is more of a trend and not an indication that no one has any ideas in Hollywood. Whatever the case, I'm just hoping that Oldboy's good name isn't completely trashed with this remake. I recommend checking out the Korean version if you get a chance. I don't want to spoil but if you do watch it, you'll understand my apprehension. This post was kinda random but I'm anxious to see how this pans out and I'm bored so yeah... I mean, Chyeah!

Rod-Man Honors: Mad Men

It's been a month or so since I finished all of the Mad Men that exists. Recently I've been going into withdrawals. I crave the drama of advertising in the 1960s in an unhealthy way. For all you uncultured folks out there, Mad Men is a series on AMC that's commonly revered as one of the greatest shows on television. Only other AMC shows and movie channels (HBO, Showtime) match it's level of brilliance. The details, the twists, the direction, it's all so perfect.

Sadly, due to AMC's stupidity, the fifth season of the critically acclaimed series has been pushed back into 2012. At least 2012 is shaping up to be one of the best years the entertainment industry has ever seen. Well, according to me it is. The season opener is reportedly being directed by the show's star, Jon Hamm. If you don't watch the show you might have seen him in The Town as officer Adam Frowley, the cop who stayed on Affleck's back 'til the end. You may have also seen him in Bridesmaids where he plays Ted, Wiig's casual lover. He does an outstanding job as creative director, Donald Draper, in the series. Draper is a man shrouded in mystery. As the series progresses and Don Draper's past is revealed, Hamm succeeds in making a seemingly untouchable figure look more and more vulnerable. I'll be surprised if Ham & Cheese doesn't grab an Emmy in the near future. However, the show is called Mad Men and not Mad Man. The efforts of the cast has led to the show's winning of two SAG awards for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series." They, along with the crew of directors and writers have earned 6 Primetime Emmys, including "Outstanding Drama Series" for three years running.

I, like millions of others, am patiently waiting for the premiere of Season 5. I've never been more sure that something I'm anticipating will be stellar and completely worth my excitement. There's really nothing else to say. If you haven't been watching Mad Men, you've got some time to catch up before the series starts back up. Look out for AMC to show a marathon or something. As a matter of fact, they're showing every episode in the series in order in 3 hour blocks at 6 in the morning. I don't recommend waking up that early (even though this is worth it) so I recommend finding some alternative method of catching up. That's it for now. Top 5 Movies of the Summer.

I saw over 10 movies in the past few months. Some were fantastic, others were underwhelming. I've been planning on making this list for a while and now I feel like I can fairly make this list. I missed 1 or 2 "important" movies this year but I think I've seen, heard, and read enough that it won't matter. Before I go any further, I want to go ahead and throw out my honorable mention to all the good comedies that were released this summer. The Hangover part 2 had the comedy momentum coming into this summer but it was relatively weak compared to 30 Minutes or Less, Bridesmaids, and Horrible Bosses. They all brought something new to the table and you really can't go wrong watching any one of them. That being said, it's time to get to the real summer blockbusters.

5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 AND The Dark Knight Rises trailer

I was going to make the TDKR trailer #1 but that would have been comedic theft from Kevin Smith. Also, it would have disappointed too many people, so I put it at number 5 with the movie it was attached to. The second part of this double feature, the final Harry Potter movie, is supposed to be fantastic. I didn't actually see this but from what I've heard it's the best in the series. It's the only HP movie in a while that's had trailers that make me actually want to see it and even catch up with the old ones. While I can't be sure this movie should have made this list, I doubt anyone will disagree.

4. The Avengers Previews: Thor & Captain America

I had a great time watching both Thor and Captain America. Truthfully, I can't say which I enjoyed more so they're both here at #4. I can't help but feel both movies would have been better if they didn't have to tie-in to the Avengers film coming out next year. That being said, all this set-up pretty much ensures a massive, intricate storyline for next year. The goals of both movies were to be good enough to generate interest for The Avengers and they more than accomplished that. I never got around to reviewing Captain America but it really covered all the bases. It actually had me choked up near the end. Thor was just a great time and Chris Hemsworth proved that he belongs in this series with the big names. I can't wait to see them with RDJ and Ruffalo come next year.

3. Super 8

Super 8's a movie I had been looking forward to ever since it's first teaser trailer. You might remember first seeing that train de-rail and crash in an eruption of flame and metal, followed by the thunderous pounds of some escaping being. It was riveting, and the movie delivered on keeping that interest alive. The all-child main cast was a refreshing twist and succeeded in giving the film some character. Is it my favorite sci-fi flick ever? Of course not. Would I see it again? In a heartbeat. Now that I think about it, I need to see this again. It comes out on September 20th, I might just buy it. It's certainly worth it.

2. X-Men: First Class

It's difficult for me to put this at number 2 because I loved this movie. It's my favorite of the series, hands down. Wolverine and Cyclops are fine and all but young Xavier and Magneto are the greatest lead men the series has ever seen. I understand that this movie doesn't quite stick to... well, anything. It clashes with a lot of what's happened in the previous X-Men movies and doesn't follow the comic books it's based on at all. However, I respect the creators for deciding that they were going to go ahead and make a good movie with the limitations they had. They had the disadvantage of people being sick of most of the important X-Men. They couldn't also cripple themselves by sticking to all of the nonsense built in to the previous four movies. This is the best superhero movie of the year. What else do I need to say?

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This movie wasn't even in my "theatre queue" this year. It caught my attention with a couple of intriguing trailers and, of course, a familiar name. Now that I've seen it twice I think I can safely say that it is the Movie of the Summer. Had this been 2008, 2009, 2010, or even 2012, Rise would probably be taking a backseat to another movie. That's not to say this doesn't deserve the number 1 spot. The other years I mentioned boast summer films with Oscar ambitions. If Rise gets anything, it should be for outstanding achievement in special effects because I've never felt so much for a chimpanzee or a CGI being in my life. If the minds behind this movie stay on board for a new Planet of the Apes, I don't see why it couldn't be just as respected and adored as Heston's original. In a time where breathing life into forgotten franchises is the norm, it's nice to see there are still people trying to do it right.

That's the end of this list. I hope you enjoyed it. If you did, read other stuff we put on this here site. I'm about to go back to school but by my 3rd year I realize that means nothing about my posting. I could post more, I could post less. Film reviews will probably stop since I won't be able to go to the movies but there are a few things I've got to see and some concerts I plan on getting to so I'll try to keep you all posted. 'Til then, CHYEAH!

OH! One extra honorable mention for The Tree of Life. It's not really a summer movie but it did come out in the summer. I couldn't really put it in this list because it's much too different to compare to any of these. That is all.

What's the Best Call of Duty?: COD4?

With Modern Warfare 3 just three months away, I have decided to post my opinion on the best Call of Duty game, with some comments about the weapons, maps, and etc.

Lets start with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Why it's good:

First Call of Duty to include a deeper, more progressive multiplayer, including Killstreaks, new xp based ranking system, Prestige mode, and gun customization featuring attachments. The Singleplayer Campaign was also groundbreaking, with an amazing narrative, featuring one of the best FPS mission in videogame history, All Ghillied Up. It graphics were photo-realistic for it's time, and helped put the FPS genre on the map again.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."
CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo.

I can't wait! One of my favorite FPS's next to COD, and Quake gets a new installment! It is due in early 2012 on Psn, XBLA, and steam.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Review

This is my review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Don't forget to read TheKillerCliche's review of Watch the Throne right after you're done. You can just keep scrolling down. Actually, just scroll down forever and read everything we've ever posted. chyeah.

Alright, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I'm only just realizing how stupid long that title is. That being said, the title might be the only thing wrong with this movie. The story follows the life of Caesar, a chimpanzee born with extraordinary intelligence thanks to a serum given to his mother and passed down to him genetically. The serum was developed by James Franco's character, Will Rodman. I swear, all us Rod-Mans are geniuses. Anyway, he was trying to create a cure for Alzheimer's to use on his father. He found that not only did it cure him, but improved his mind's capabilities in similar ways that it did the chimp. In case you couldn't guess from the fact that this is a prequel/reboot to Planet of the Apes, the serum is given to some other Apes and they... well they rise. Eventually, they'll probably take over the planet.

The performances from the human characters were good but what really stands out is the performance of Andy Serkis as Caesar. Never have I felt so much emotion from a digitally created character. Pixar wishes they could animate something as genuinely moving as Caesar in his darker moments. He pretty much carries the movie so it was important that he feel authentic and the Mo-Cap guys nailed it. They really gave us a sense that he was too smart to be treated as a chimp, that he was as human as any of us. At times, it was kind of scary. At others, it was awesome. I'll leave it at that.

I've never heard of director Rupert Wyatt but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get more work. I hope he gets a shot at doing the next movie as well. My brother remarked that the marketing didn't really sell this movie as a summer blockbuster. Honestly, if you didn't go to the movies much and see the trailers over and over again, you might not have known too much about this at all. Rise has pretty much everything you could possibly want from a summer movie though. The action is some of the best I've seen all year. I won't spoil but I will say this, don't fuck with gorillas. It's funny without being corny or unnecessary like certain Michael Bay-directed movies this year. It's plenty dramatic too thanks to Franco. He doesn't lose an arm in this one but he does lose a friend. Close enough. Lastly, I can guarantee that at one point your jaw will drop to the ground. What more can you ask for? Nothing. The answer is nothing. Now go see it.

I'm giving Rise of the Planet of the Apes a rating of 6 Marvel Apes. Step your game up, Avengers. Chyeah!

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Watch The Throne REVIEW (Deluxe Version)

Collaboration between Jay-Z and Kanye West is nothing new (Swagga Like Us (remix), Monster, Run This Town), as the duo are some of the most talented artists in Hip-Hop today. With many Grammy wins, Platinum records, and large followings, the rap group, "The Throne" was born, when these lyrical geniuses collided, Watch the Throne, is the near-perfect-love-child of their efforts.

Kanye West coming off the excellent, "My Twisted, Dark, Beautiful Fantasy", and Jay-Z releasing well recieved "The Blueprint 3" in 2009, nothing but great lyrics, and quality production would be anticipated from their dual efforts. After listening to the album multiple times, I can safely say that this album is the best albums both Kanye West AND Jay-Z (behind College Dropout, and The Blueprint respectively). Watch The Throne sounds so well put together, and just screams detail and quality which isn't surprising, but after every track, I can't stop being surprised.

From the first track, titled "No Church in the Wild", which features Frank Ocean of Odd Future fame (who delivers a great chorus to the track), the album starts on a rapid pace, which only increases throughout the duration of the album. Watch The Throne leads the listener into deep emotional territory in some songs, such as "New Day", where Jay-Z and Kanye address how a good father is something that is hard to be, but how the modern day child need this figure in their young life. This message is only one of the deep thoughts that the Throne drive deep into the audience, leaving them with a sense of spiritual branding from the lyrics. The album stays relatively low on featuring artists, with Frank Ocean, Beyonce, and Mr. Hudson being the only artists on the album besides the duo. This actually helps Watch The Throne reach heights of lyric balance between Jay-Z and West, establishing their great chemistry even further. The whole album is an example to this, but "Otis" and "Gotta Have It" are some of the best examples of this chemistry, as they add on to each others verses, finishing metaphors and adding a sound which is rare in Hip-Hop today.

Speaking of sound, the production of this album is something that is not to be taken for granted, from Q-Tip (Lift Off, Thats My B*tch), to Swizz Beats (Welcome To The Jungle), The Neptunes (Gotta Have It), and RZA (New Day), Pete Rock (The Joy) and Lex Luger (H•A•M) offering their talents, with some of the best production I have ever heard on a rap album, including hard hitting beats (Murder to Excellence), some ballad types (Made in America), some club bangers (Welcome to the Jungle), not to mention the soulful overall tone of the album, which beckons over all 16 tracks (12 in the regular edition). The samples used in this album have reached the peak in mixing soul with rap, creating seamless lyrical fabric, weaving between The Throne, and soul stars as, James Brown, Otis Redding, Syl Johnson, Nina Simone, and Curtis Mayfield.

In the process of writing this review, I tried to find something negative to say about Watch The Throne, from Kanye trying to steal the show to often, not giving Jay-Z enough spotlight, and how that Frank Ocean did not need to be on two whole tracks (No Church in the Wild, and Made in America), that John Legend would have been a better pick. Like Kanye says on Why I Love You, "Too much of a good thing huh?". But as I type in more attacking the album like most reviewers would do in glee, I stop to think, "This album is still fucking amazing, and who gives a shit about duplicating a artist if he is amazing on both tracks, and no one gets overshadowed at all, both artists are even and on the very top of their game" So I end by saying that Watch The Throne is the most complete, well produced and lyrically amazing album I have heard in a long time. Every track sounds different, has it's own flair, from 90's gangsta rap simple beats, to signature Swizz Beats and Neptunes to Kanye's signature "sample happy" production, adding to the melting pot of sounds in Watch The Throne. You have heard it here first, this album is a "mega diverse", well produced collaboration from two of the best artists in Hip-Hop today, which never features a dull song, or a skip-able track.

Normally in a album review you will see songs that are the best on the album, which are recommended, but I think almost every song on Watch the Throne is of the same amazing quality, so I will list my favorites:

This is my LAST Call of Duty: Black Ops Montage. I deleted my original 4th montage (The Gangster Culmination) due to it not living up to my expectations. Without a Capture device to get better quality, and clips longer than 30 seconds, I had to use the Theater mode, Render, Download my OWN Youtube Video (ain't that a bitch) and edit the nasty compressed video in a editing program.

This method butchers the quality. But it is closer to my original vision than any other Montage I have released. Yes, the voiceovers are all done by me. Music done by AMAZING Dubstep artist; Skrillex.

What you see above is the cover art to a new song by my favorite band, M83. M83 is the brainchild of Anthony Gonzalez. I'm talking about the French electronic/shoegaze musician, not the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver. Anyway, the new song is called Midnight City and it's pretty good. M83 fans will notice that it seems to borrow the pop feel that Gonzalez experimented with in Saturdays = Youth with more of the type of build he had on Before the Dawn Heals Us or Dead Cities. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the late sax solo featured here. For the people who don't know M83, check out the song and see if you like it.

Midnight City by M83

Gonzalez has stated that he's going for a more "epic" feel for his upcoming album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. It's supposed to be out this October. If Midnight City is any indication, I'm sure I'm going to love it. Judging by the reactions I'm reading on the song's last.fm page, fellow fans are on their way to musical bliss when the album drops. Or should I say "albums." Hurry Up has been confirmed as a double album so that means twice as much M83 as we thought we were gonna get. As of right now, it's my most anticipated album of the fall. Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition LEAKED

Robert Bowling on Twitter recently gave his followers a look at the upcoming Hardened Edition box coming November 8, 2011. The inside details are absent, but the box seems to have a matte black finish, sporting the logo, and a traced Mp5 with a red dot scope outlined in black under the logo.

Bowling said this is directly from the factory line, and that we will see more of it, and the Multiplayer reveal as well, at the Call of Duty XP event, September 2nd, and 3rd. I can't wait.

100% Confirmed NEW Modern Warfare 3 Info

I am super excited for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as I am a crazy Call of Duty Fanboy (there I said it), so I am here to reveal some amazing news straight from Robert Bowling himself, the Community Manager at Infinity Ward. Bowling has confirmed this information about the game via his Official Twitter account or by a recent interview with a German Publication Tweakers.net. For those who do not have the time to sort through that stuff. I have took the time to do it for you. (Your Welcome). And if all of this is old news to you (sorry, I guess...).

Multiplayer Details (100% Confirmed)

Infinity Ward will continue to support the game post launch better than MW2, via updates and support.

MW3 will build up from CoD4 and polish every aspect from MW2 (gameplay-wise)

MW3 will try to borrow some of the gameplay elements from COD4, playing on less killstreaks, and more gun-on-gun action

Just to clear the rumors: There is no Stopping Power, Danger Close, Juggernaut, One Man Army, Commando, Last Stand or Tactical Nuke

The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra

It's been a little over a year since M. Night took the name The Last Airbender and stomped all over it with that mess of "movie" supposedly based on Nickelodeon's hit animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Now the original creators are taking their name back with their spin-off miniseries, The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra. You might notice that this title doesn't make much sense because Korra isn't an airbender so she can't be the last one. Honestly, I think they just want to return the reputation of the title that Shyamalan destroyed.

I think I posted about this before but as an update, it's been 70 years since the events of the original series. As you can see, technology has advanced pretty significantly under Aang. I guess when you have people who can shape skyscrapers in a matter of seconds with earth (and metal) bending, you can throw buildings up pretty quickly. Korra is the new avatar now and so far she looks pretty badass. She's obviously quite different from Aang, a welcome change for this new series. You may have also noticed a shady looking character at the end of the trailer. I've read that his name is Oman and he's the leader of The Equalists, an anti-bending group. I can't wait to see how their struggle unfolds. The show is supposed to come out next year so just file it next to The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the THE END OF THE WORLD, as stuff you're waiting to see in 2012.

Hey everyone, this week has marked the release of a few new trailers. Comic-Con is right around the corner so studios like Columbia & Warner Bros. have decided to reveal teasers for their 2012 superhero summer blockbusters. Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises have finally opened themselves up for some initial speculation. So, let us speculate.

You might notice that this trailer is pretty serious. Peter's parents barely get a mention in the 2002 Spider-Man and I just realized I have no idea what exactly happened to them. Even though we won't get the whole story, it's nice to know that Webb's at least thinking about these things. He's also sticking to source material when it comes to old girlfriends (Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy) and WEB SHOOTERS! Hey, if he thinks he can pull it off, more power to him. My only fear after this trailer is that, because it's so serious, we won't see the wise-cracking Spider-Man that he is in the comics. So far it looks like Webb successfully turned Spider-Man into an indie drama... then dumps a superhero movie on top of it. I'm not sure what the budget of this movie is but up until the science labs and spider powers, it doesn't look very high. That's a good thing though because it means however much money they do have will go to good use. As Nolan has shown us in the past, when it comes to special effects, less is more.

Speaking of Nolan! Even though this trailer uses a lot of old footage, it's still pretty exciting. Maybe you don't remember but the first teaser for The Dark Knight had no footage at all. So that being said... BE GRATEFUL! Nolan doesn't have to give us anything. If there was never any footage of this movie, you'd still be there opening day. I know I would be. Anyway, we do get a good look at Bane in the trailer. They decided to ditch the full face mask in favor of a creepy looking claw-like mouth guard strapped to his face. Like everything else Nolan does, it works. Sadly we don't get a look at anyone from the Inception reunion or Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. My favorite part in the trailer is easily the end. I can't explain it but the way it's shot is nerve-racking and even a little scary. Maybe this is where Bane breaks the Bat? I can't be sure of that but I'm absolutely positive that I won't be disappointed in this movie.

Are there really still movies coming out this year? They need to hurry up so I can watch these 2012 movies. Apparently The Avengers trailer leaked but I won't watch it until it's official. This is more than enough to wet my whistle before Comic-Con, Captain America, and Cowboys & Aliens in the coming weeks. That's it for now errbody. Chyeah!

Hey fellow Chyeah followers, I am writing this blog via my new Ipad, which doesn't really need a review (10/10)!

Sorry for the lack of updates from me, I am currently enrolled in a summer program that ends wedensday, then it's off to NSU in the beginning of August.

While you still won't see as many updates from me as you are used to, This doesn't mean I am resigning my post as the most badass Chyeah member behind Rod-Man. But it is what you have to deal with for the time being.

This isn't the end of Chyeah, just the end of 100 posts that signify the opposite of "Quality over quantity", and more meaningful posts from me and your fellow Chyeah staff. The Story of the Boy Who Lived Comes Full Circle

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has been over for about an hour now. I was debating whether or not I should sleep on this or write the review with my first opinions fresh in my mind. Obviously I settled for the latter. I went in to this film like I've gone into all the other Potter films, with the knowledge that whatever I see onscreen will not surpass what I read in the books. This film follows in the tradition of the previous movies in confirming that notion. That being said, it is a very good film and a fitting end to the Potter franchise.

Oddly enough this is one of the shorter Potter films in the series, spanning only a little over 2 hours. Even more oddly enough, it works at that length. The majority of the movie is dedicated to the final battle at Hogwarts, as it should be. The gold standard for special effects battles of epic proportions, at least in my mind, is the battle sequence from the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Does the battle at Hogwarts top it? I don't think so, but it certainly gives it a run for its money. Most of the time, when I watch a movie that contains lots of f/x, at some point I realize what I'm seeing is fake. If that thought occurred to me while watching DH2, I don't recall it. This is a film that needs effects; more importantly it needs good effects. I will be very surprised if DH2 is not only nominated for a special effects Oscar, but wins it.

As far as the story, if you don't already know it, you need to leave this page now. I won't reveal anything because there is nothing to reveal. There are elements of the story that have been changed, naturally, for the screen; some sequences, such as the final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort have been altered to be more cinematic, but that is acceptable. A couple of times I found myself only slightly annoyed at some aspects that were curtailed, but I remembered that everything added or removed from the original book has to go through J.K. Rowling for approval. Therefore, I find myself unable to complain. To be sure, this film's triumphs greatly overshadow any missteps I feel it may have made.

As far as the performances are concerned, everything feels right. Some major characters have minor roles in this last installment, but that is the nature of film. All in all, I believe Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is as good as it could possibly be under the constraints of film. I will probably give this film a second viewing in theaters.

The Harry Potter franchise has meant a lot to a lot of people. I first stumbled upon Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when I was about 9 or 10. Ever since that first read I've loved the series. Now that the books and movies are all out and done, I am left to reflect on what Harry Potter has meant to me. If anything, I think that Harry Potter has been a gift I could never have asked for. At the age of 20, I can still say that whenever I pop open those books, I am fully engrossed by the magic and wonder of the wizarding world.

The Tree of Life Review... sorta.

The Tree of Life isn't really the sort of movie I can review. Usually when I sit down to write a review, I think about an aspect of a movie that needs critiquing, and give my opinion on how that particular movie did. How was the plot? How was the acting? the direction? etc etc. I could do that for this movie but it simply wouldn't help. The acting was fantastic, sure, but that was pretty much a given. The direction and cinematography were beautiful. Malick knows how to make a visually stunning film, that's for sure. The plot is interesting. There aren't all that many outstanding events as much as there is a significant portion of the life of young Jack O'Brien which shows us his relationship with his family; most importantly, his father.

Before we ever get to see any of this, we are treated to Terrence Malick's interpretation of the formation of the universe. The only thing that came before it was the news of a dead son for the O'Briens and a look at Sean Penn's character at his day job in the city. To be honest, I was both confused and angry while watching the evolution scene. We knew almost nothing at this point and then we were tossed into this odd, seemingly unrelated segment. Once it's over, the movie becomes more traditional. From what I've gathered, Malick included the segment to give the viewer a specific scope to view the movie through. You might say he wanted us to compare the formation of the universe with the raising of a family. There's another theory that Malick wanted us to see just how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. Personally I think he could have gone a different way if that's what he was trying to do but this isn't the kind of movie with a "right answer." I'm more fond of the idea that he wants us to find parallels because it's more fun. We see struggles between a father and son that (to me) mimic that of dinosaurs we saw before it. I say that there are no right answers and give points on my opinion because this movie is very Kubrick-esque in it's "message." I couldn't stop comparing it to 2001: A Space Odyssey in my head the whole time I was watching it. I've only seen one other Terrence Malick picture. In The Thin Red Line his message is much clearer. Or should I say, it's easier to interpret something from it. The Tree of Life hints at a lot but doesn't tell you anything. In addition to 2001, I couldn't stop thinking the word "pretentious" either. I don't know if I still feel that way but this is the first time I've ever thought that word while watching a movie so it probably holds true somewhere in my mind.

I did enjoy watching The Tree of Life (by the 2nd half) and I want to see it again. I feel I need to see it again. Maybe it's bullshit and I'm attaching to it because I think it's supposed to good. That may very well be true. There's a chance that this movie is nonsense because it's trying so hard to be deep. However, I think there's an equal chance that this is a grand achievement in storytelling on film. This movie makes me wish I were smarter so I could decipher between the two. What can't be denied is that Terrence Malick succeeded in creating something new and different. He's made something that I can't call bad just because I don't really know what it is. He's made me question what "good" is in a way I haven't thought about since I began getting interested in film. No score this time. Just Chyeah!

Finally Famous: The Album: The Review

I HATE THIS ALBUM COVER. But that's beside the point...

Kanye West's GOOD Music label has recently been officially accepted into the Def Jam family. The first release under the label after this new partnership is that of Kanye's protégé, Big Sean. Finally Famous is something like Big Sean's version of The College Dropout. He tells his story, backs himself with industry talent, and most importantly, makes something that's going to ensure that he'll be back for another album in the future and quite possibly be a Big name in the industry for a long time.

Maybe I shouldn't compare Finally Famous to College Dropout. I don't want you thinking it's THAT good. It's not changing the game or anything. Sean also has the disadvantage of not being a producer. Obviously when you compose the music to a project you're going to provide the vocals for, you have more control over the overall product. Sean touches on a lot of topics but there aren't a lot of obvious, meaningful themes throughout the entire CD. I would say the album suffers from Sean not being that great of a rapper, but he's streets ahead of a lot of his young competition. He's still somewhat incosistent but the featured artists do manage to shine from start to finish. Pharell, John Legend, Kanye, and Lupe all back Sean in his 12-track story. Dwele and Pusha T can also be found as featured artists on some of the bonus tracks. You'll also find artists like Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, Chris Brown, and The-Dream if you're into that sort of thing. Honestly, that's what Finally Famous is all about. It's an album straight from Sean for hip-hop fans of every sort. In the past I've thought of Sean's verses as lazy but now I see that his flow is just really laid back. That's fine but I wish he'd get really angry every once in a while. He does the whole "fuck you" thing like most rappers but I feel like it's coming from a place where he doesn't care about his haters. I want to hear him hate his haters for a second.

Def Jam wants Big Sean to do for hip-hop what Beyonce's done for R&B. Now I'm honestly not exactly sure what that means. If I had to guess, I'd say they want him to have hit after hit after manufactured billboard hit. They want us to get completely sick of seeing and hearing Big Sean. They want us to get tired of him but not hate him, just really not want to hear him ever. I doubt that's what they mean though. They probably just want him to get huge. I'm not sure Finally Famous is going to propel him to that level of popularity but it proves that he can make music the masses will want to listen to. I'm just glad he can do this without becoming a clone of what's been successful for other rappers.

If you've got dreams of being famous, your theme song might be somewhere on Finally Famous. If you're not one of those people, you should still check it out for something to bob your head to. A few of the lines might actually catch you by surprise and you'll probably like something you hear. I'm giving this album 10 Jesus Pieces. CHYEAH!

Song of the Moment (7/6/11)

Today's Song of the Moment is the first single from Common's upcoming album The Dreamer, The Believer. It's called "Ghetto Dreams" and it features Nas. Yes, Nas and Common on the same track. The song has a real 90s feel. No I.D. is the producer so credit goes to him for a sick beat, complete with old school dj scratches. Nas sings the hook and contributes the last verse. These guys are real rappers and this is a real rap song. Even their flows and lyrics sound like something you'd hear in the 90s. For something that sounds like it could be 15-years old, I'm happy to say this track is as fresh as fresh could be.

Bon Iver Review

Last week, the second Bon Iver album was released. This one is self titled for good reason. With For Emma, Forever Ago, a story was being told. The music was a reflection of Justin Vernon's retreat to solitude due to sickness, both physically and emotionally. It was a cold, lonely collection of songs. This time around, Justin and the band have cranked up the volume and put a spin on their sound to make a much more grandiose sophmore album.

Since his debut, Justin Vernon has been all over the music industry. He made a few appearances on Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and was one of the big members of indie supergroup, Gayngs. The group's musical growth is obvious from the very first song, "Perth." I found this song to be almost post-rockesque with it's loud-quiet-dynamics. The guitars and drums were also reminiscent of something you might hear from Mogwai. From start to finish, we're given grander instrumentation. That difference makes Bon Iver a less "folky" project. It's closer to what you might expect from more traditional indie or even indie rock.

Influences for this album seem to reach across multiple genres and decades. The sounds combine to create an album that's obviously indie without being generic. My only real issue with it is the vocals. While I love Vernon's voice, it's hard to understand what he's saying. Usually I wouldn't care all that much but if his lyrics are nearly as meaningful here as they are on For Emma, then they're completely worth paying attention to. I think it's obvious that Bon Iver is an improvement, musically, but I can't say yet if I like it better. For Emma, Forever Ago was raw emotion unlike most things I've ever heard. Bon Iver is a real album. Regardless of my feelings towards it, it proves that this band is not a one hit wonder. They are not destined to be defined by the hit success of their first album. Expect these guys to be around for a while, leading the way in the indie scene.

Super 8 Review

I'm about to write some reviews. This first one is for Super 8. After I saw it on the Saturday after it's release, I chilled out most of Sunday before being kidnapped and not returned home until Tuesday night. Then I started working and haven't felt like doing this. I still don't really feel like it but it needs to be done. I'll probably go quickly.

The new J.J. Abrams movie, Super 8, is in some ways similar to the 2008 mysterious monster flick, Cloverfield, that he produced. Based on trailers alone, it would seem that both of them are movies about some terrible and unstoppable creature wreaking havoc on humans. To some extent, Super 8 is just that. However, Abrams is behind the camera this time and it's nowhere near as shaky. That goes both literally and figuratively. Not only is the filming done more traditionally for Super 8, but the movie is generally more solid. A lot of people were upset with Cloverfield's lack of information but Super 8 doesn't experience that problem. Everything is eventually explained. It's not the most amazing tale or anything that's going to keep you guessing the whole movie, but it moves the plot along just fine.

Super 8 is about more than just a monster though. What really makes the movie, in my eyes, are the cast of characters consisting heavily of children. In Super 8, the kids are trying to make a zombie movie for a film festival. They're filming near the train tracks when the train crashes, derails, and basically explodes. It's at this point that the monster is released and shit starts to go down. It soon becomes apparent that there's a lot that we don't know about the incident. The rest of the movie explains exactly what's going on, all the while developing the relationships of these children to each other, their parents, and the incident. The movie unfolds predictably in some parts (the intimate "boy-girl" relationship parts) and somewhat interestingly in others (mostly with the monster). I've got no real complaints when it comes to the plot. The only one I could think of would spoil it for you and I've already come to terms with why it's no big deal.

The performances were a high point. I actually liked the kids more than the adults in the movie. Their relationships with each other were fleshed out and meaningful. The kids who weren't supposed to be important just weren't, so I never got the chance to hate them, which is good. Much of their dialogue consisted of things like "shut up" and just saying "shit" when something was going wrong. I actually loved that about this movie. It seemed more realistic than the kids being all clever like they had writers or something. I'd tell you the actors but I don't know them and you wouldn't care. I think the biggest "name" in the movie is Elle Fanning and that's just because she's Dakota's little sister. Using unknowns works for this movie because none of the actors have to be all that fantastic to keep things moving.

I know what you're all wondering though. "What was the monster? Was it an alien? Was it a Transformer? Was it ET?" Well I'm not going to tell you. I'm not going to tell you because I expect you to see this eventually. I will say that the monster was pretty frightening. It's visceral and agile and terrifying in all the ways you'll want it to be. It look pretty good too, nice effects and CG and all that good stuff. I've really got no complaints. I didn't fall in love with this movie or anything but I can't say I regret paying for it. I love comic book superhero movies but it's refreshing to see a big summer blockbuster that's not based on 50-year-old stories.

I rate this movie... INFINITE THUMBS UP.

Sexting

I'm sure that when Alexander Graham-Bell invented the telephone he could never have imagined that one day, they would be totally wireless, much less that one day young people would use them to transmit nude photos of themselves to others. Thank goodness good ol' fashioned American ingenuity and know-how came together to make that dream a reality. Ever since technology had remarkably steep improvements in the latter half of the 20th century, there seems to have been an equally steep rise of this epidemic to protect children from it. "Sexting" has done nothing to quell this problem; if anything it's only exacerbated it. Sexting is generally defined as texting messages that consist of dialogue of a sexual nature and also sending nude or partially nude photos via cell phone. Now let's be frank, most of us have done this in some form whether benign or extreme. Generally speaking I don't really see this as a big problem. Sex is appealing. It just is. Every living organism is born with two main instincts: survival and reproduction. People were designed to be sexually attracted to one another in order for the species to continue. Whether for reproduction or pleasure, it is what it is and we shouldn't fear it or shy away from it. More importantly, we shouldn't worry about kids discovering it. I don't know if it has to do with the puritanical blood of the first settlers still coursing through the veins of the collective consciousness of our society, but America has a huge fuck problem. Especially when it has to do with kids. To be clear, when I say "kids" I'm referring to teenagers, because teenagers are the ones doing most if not all of the sexting. A lot of people have a problem with this because they don't want their kids exposed (no pun intended) to this stuff. Personally I think that if a kid as young as 13 wants to send pictures of themselves to another 13 year old...whatever. I don't really care. Now you might say, "...but Nick, what about older people sending pictures to younger kids." Excellent point. To that, I simply say this: if there is a 19 year old guy with nude pictures of a 15 year old girl on his phone...big deal. I really don't think it's that big of an issue, especially when you consider the double standard there is towards girls. We tend to think of girls in general as being the more pure and innocent of the sexes, so naturally we think that an older boy with pictures of a younger girl is wrong. But consider the flip side to that. What if a 15 year old boy had pictures of a 19 year old girl on his phone? I guarantee you no one would care as much. People would probably just say, "Wow. You must be one charming little fucker. Lucky kid." His father would probably be secretly proud. Now, if there are teenagers sending pictures of themselves to people that are like 30, then they're just stupid. Lock up the 30 year old and punish the teenager for being an idiot. Basically as long as it's kept within a certain age range I don't think it's anything to worry about; certainly not something for the law to get involved in. If anything it's the parents' job to monitor their kids' activities anyway and they should deal with it. All in all, if you're going to upset about something don't let it be something as natural as human sexuality. Remember, it wasn't so long ago that it was normal for a 13 year old girl to marry a man in his mid twenties.

R&B in 2011

I'm a few months late on this post but it doesn't really matter. This particular post is about 2 R&B acts that have come out and done things differently. R&B is a pretty easy genre to recreate. The beats are usually plain and the lyrics are often cliche. I'm a fan of R&B but even my favorites like John Legend and Alicia Keys only change up the formula so much. They've distinguished themselves by being masters of their craft, but these new acts have taken a different route. Culturally relevant lyrics and eclectically influenced beats make The Weeknd and Frank Ocean a couple of acts that are certainly worth your listen.

The Weeknd

I only found out about this group yesterday via Last.fm. I was immediately intrigued when I along with R&B, the group was tagged as "electronic" and "dubstep." Now, I'm not a big dubstep fan, but R&B with dubstep influences sounded like something I needed to listen to. They've only had 1 album so far and it's critical acclaim of "House of Balloons" was enough to make me download it on the spot. Obviously, I wasn't disappointed. It's definitely not your conventional R&B record. The lyrics are sung beautifully but they don't seem like they've been written and re-written hundreds of times like radio hits. They're raw and emotional. Abel (the singer) of course explores the realms of love and sex but he also sings about the dark side of drugs and money and how they affect relationships. I can't exactly relate but hearing touching sentiments from what seems like a real person who has problems other than girls is pretty interesting. This is an R&B album for rap lovers & electronic enthusiasts alike. I recommend the song Wicked Games to get a taste of what it's about.

Frank Ocean

By now I'm sure you've heard of Frank Ocean since he made an appearance in Tyler, The Creator's "She" video and has been blowing up relatively quickly. Outside of Tyler, he's probably the most independently successful Odd Future member so far. His 2011 album, "Nostalgia, Ultra," has even produced a charted single. "Novacane" is accessible in sound but the lyrics aren't exactly kid friendly. Vulgarity is something that for one reason or another, I've personally come to like in music. However, "Novacane" is also a very clever take on the issue of finding a woman, losing her, and trying to fill the void. The album actually deals heavily with his own heartbreak. Frank has written songs for some big artists like John Legend and Beyonce but he was intent on making his personal album just that, personal. In his attempt to just say what's on his mind without worrying about how it would affect people, he succeeded in making music that is both authentic and relatable. My favorite song of his is actually Songs for Women. It's an ironic, interesting story about his talent. Just give it a listen.

Whether or not you're a fan of R&B, you may very well found something you like in the discographies of these two artists. Both are just getting started but I'm expecting great things in the future. Frank's album is actual getting re-released in stores sometime soon and that's the first step. Well, that's it for now. Thanks for reading. Chyeah!

Mid-Generation of Consoles

This year, Nintendo released their 3DS. They followed that up with the Wii U today in their E3 keynote. Sony also announced their PSVita. This is not a new console generation. Two of them are portables and one is somewhat of an HD redux. Between now and next year, these consoles will be showing us the future of gaming without dropping us directly into it just yet. I just wanted to take a second and talk about these new innovations.

Nintendo 3DS

This has been out for a little while now but apparently sales aren't going great. At least, not for a Nintendo console. I see that changing soon when the heavy hitters start coming out. Nintendo showed off Kid Icarus: Uprising and LoZ: Ocarina of Time 3D, both of which should be coming soon. OoT comes out next week actually. They've also got Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Star Fox 64 3D around the corner. That's just the 1st party games. Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Tekken will all make the 3DS a handheld worth having. People have been saying that $250 is steep but it doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me. If you disagree, I'm sure the price will drop eventually and bundles will come out that make it more than worth it to grab this thing. I mean, this console is going to have Ocarina of Time AND Snake Eater. What else do you need to know?

PSVita

Some specs were released for this a while ago but now we've gotten a good look at the PSV thanks to the Sony conference last night. Touch screen, touch sensitive back, DUAL analog sticks, front & rear facing cameras, 3G & Wi-Fi, and other features make this both a game console and an all purpose gadget. Sony showed us that they're developing an Uncharted game just for the Vita and I'm sure it won't disappoint. It was also revealed that Street Fighter X Tekken will be on the Vita and feature Cole McGrath of Infamous 2 as a special character. I think people were expecting the Vita to cost $400 or something because there was a huge applause when Kazuo Hirai announced that the Wi-Fi only model would cost $249.99. If you want 3G, you'll have to cough up an extra 50 bucks and deal with AT&T's network. I assume we haven't seen everything the Vita can do yet and I'm excited to see how this grows and becomes an even more valuable piece of hardware in the future.

Wii U

Going into the Nintendo press conference today, I really had no idea what "Project Cafe" was going to be. They revealed it with its new, innovative controller. It's more conventional in that it has 2 shoulder buttons on each side of it, 2 analog sticks, and pretty standard face buttons. However, there's also a 6.2 inch screen in the middle of it. From what I could tell, this screen is pretty much magic. You can play games on it without using the TV at all or you can stop playing a game on tv to play it on the controller. It can also supplement the TV by having extra info or a totally different display. For example, if you're playing a golf game, you can put the controller on the floor with a display of the ball on it and knock it off with your original Wiimote. This is not a handheld console we're talking about though. The new Wii U is Nintendo's first HD console. It's power is in the range of the 360 & PS3 and apparently developers realize that because they're making some pretty big name titles for the WU. Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham City, and Ninja Gaiden 3 will all be featured on the console, and I assume with special functionality. It's supposed to be out in 2012 and the price is unannounced. Since Nintendo didn't talk about any Wii games besides Skyward Sword, I assume we'll start seeing trailers for the WU games later this year to get us excited. I'll start now by getting excited for the announced Super Smash Bros game.

I just wanted to take a little time to talk about these new "mid-gen" consoles. I'm excited to see how they do and what they'll mean for the next generation that we should expect to see in 4 or 5 years. That's it for now. Chyeah!

Review - X-Men: First Class

Hey everybody, check out this review for that new X-Men movie since it's really good and whatnot.

Basically X-Men: First Class is a recent comic book story arc that goes into the early years of the mutant superhero group, the X-Men. The movie serves more as a prequel to the other X-Men movies but honestly it doesn't really stick to the film canon at all. It's also extremely different from the comics. The characters aren't even the same as those seen in the books. Despite it's inaccuracies to both the comics and previous movies, First Class is a fantastic film, arguably the best in the series. For a movie that needed to be made so FOX could keep the license, this one was a big surprise.

This one starts similarly to the first X-Men movie, depicting Magneto's childhood in the holocaust. From there it goes on to chronicle the lives of Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier (with Mystique) as they reveal to the world what mutants can do. The movie takes place around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis so the Cold War is built in to the story in some pretty interesting ways. In order to avoid war with both mutants and the Russians, Xavier & Erik have to put a team of mutants together. This team is the films version of the X-Men: First Class. The comic crew consists of the likes of Cyclops, Iceman, Archangel, Beast, and Jean Grey. The only member that we see in the movie is Beast but the rest of the crew has already been exhausted in the movies so it makes sense that they decided to go with a new crew. I'm not going to tell you much about the crew because there are some changes from what they gather to who ends up fighting alongside them, just know that Professor X & Magneto are at the frontline of their team. During their training, relationships are built and characters are explored. It all serves to set up, not only the climax of the movie, but they entire world of the X-Men.

Now, I find it necessary to tell you that X-Men: First Class is barely a part of the other 4 X-Men films. Continuity is really screwed up. I don't feel like going into everything about it because I'd feel like I'm complaining. What I want to say is that you shouldn't let this take away from your experience with this film. There was a lot of nonsense built into the franchise just to make those movies work by themselves and it would be difficult for this movie to have to live up to everything those movies put into place. It's easier to toss what they didn't like aside and it also made for a better movie. The same goes for the fact that they didn't stick with the original First Class cast. Using those characters would have just piled on more expectations for relation to the other movies and that was obviously something they didn't want to deal with.

Once you're watching this as more of a reboot than a prequel (even though it's supposed to be a prequel) you'll probably enjoy it more. Fassbender & McAvoy are great in their roles as young Magneto & Xavier. They didn't let themselves be tied to the personalities of the characters we know. Instead, they gave us a glimpse at what more wreckless, youthful versions of them may have been. Personally, I was a huge fan of Fassbender in this. The rest of the team is cast well with relatively unknown actors. Winter's Bone star, Jennifer Lawrence, is the biggest star of them all in the role of Mystique. Kevin Bacon and January Jones play the main villains in the film. Bacon plays a former big name Nazi named Sebastian Shaw & Jones is his partner in crime, Emma Frost. I thought Bacon did a fine job as Shaw but Jones wasn't convincing as Frost. Turbo referenced her figure not quite being that of the White Queen but I thought her acting wasn't quite sexy enough. She was very 60s housewife, which is great for Mad Men but not for this role. It didn't take away from the movie as a whole though so I'll let it slide.

From start to finish, First Class did everything right. The scenes of action were well done. I got a sense of joy from the flight scenes that I can't say I've gotten in any other superhero movies. First Class is as funny as any other comic film out there. However, as with any movie dealing with the Holocaust or nuclear war, there are some powerful emotions present in this film. The plight of the X-Men has always been that they must protect a world that hates them. This is handled in a more personal fashion than in any other X-Men movie. The universal issue of blending in to society is heavily touched on as well, making this movie extremely relatable to any viewer.

I don't have much else to say. Obviously, I suggest this movie. It's in the top tier of superhero films, up there with Spider-Man 2 and the like. I'm rating X-Men: First Class 24 Mutants. If you think that's not that many, tell that to them.

Bastard

Goblin

Thought I'd make this a joint review for Tyler, the Creator's Bastard and Goblin .
Case in point, Tyler is tyrannical, blunt, violent, crude, disturbing, and absolutely amazing .
Both Bastard and Goblin are both amazing and intertwined with lyrical attacks with simple, yet catchy beats . This is what rap was all about . Rapping about whatever, not using an over-produced beat to make the song, and letting the words do the talking .
Warning though, this isn't for the weak at heart and is extremelllly explicit .
Something I wanted to point out that is really amazing in these two albums is that it makes seem like he's talking to a psychologist about before and after fame, his violent daydreams and life . Pretty damn sweet .

However, if you're looking for an amazing rapper look no further than Tyler, the Creator . Fuck off right now and download these albums and listen to them as if Tyler was going to fucking murder you if you didn't .

Zombies, Mermaids, and Spaniards...Oh My

Jack Sparrow and crew set sail again in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I saw this film a few hours ago and first let me preface this review by saying that I saw it for free. That may be the only way you'll want to see it as well.

To begin, let's go backwards. The first Pirates film was pretty good. We meet an unkempt, dread-locked, funny but skilled pirate named Jack Sparrow. His mission is clear: his crew mutinied and took over his beloved vessel and he wants it back. Clear. Crystal Clear. Dead Man's Chest: Jack has the Black Pearl and now has to square a debt with Davy Jones...ok. A little more convoluted and over the top, but ok. At World's End: Barbossa, after being killed at the end of the first film, has been resurrected by some voodoo chick who lives in a swamp, Davy Jones is now at odds with not only Sparrow, but the East India Trading Company, Jack has been sent to Davy Jones' locker which is....I don't even know what it is or how to get there or back, oh and the voodoo chick who brings Barbossa back to life also happens to be the sea goddess Calypso....whew.

Ok so that was my effort to show how the Pirates franchise sunk into a whirlpool of convoluted plots and bad story concepts. With the new film On Stranger Tides, I had high hopes. I hoped that the studio would understand their mistakes and make up for them. I thought they had. They reported that the characters Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) and William Turner (Orlando Bloom) would not be returning. I was happy with this decision because, quite frankly, their sordid love affair was really getting annoying. My hopes were all destroyed in the first half hour of this film. WARNING: TURN BACK NOW, FOR HERE BE SPOILERS!

The film opens with Jack impersonating a judge to get his first mate Gibbs out of facing the gallows. After this follows scenes of special effects and chases and guns and yadda yadda you get it. Jack then ends up shackled to a chair facing the King of England. The King wants to know if Jack is in town to gather a crew to find the Fountain of Youth. Then something awful happens....something terrible and unspeakable. Barbossa, now missing a leg and donning the uniform of a privateer (with a hideous powdered wig), hobbles in and informs Jack that he is now working for the Crown. The plot basically involves a race to the Fountain of Youth. The competitors are Jack, accompanied by new love interest Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and her father, Blackbeard (Ian McShane). As you can probably guess, each person wants different things. Jack wants the Pearl back again after Barbossa took it...again, and now it has been taken by Blackbeard where he keeps it in...wait for it....a bottle. Barbossa really wants revenge on Blackbeard from taking the Pearl from him which he took from Jack. Angelica wants life for her father, and Blackbeard wants life for himself.

If you read the title of this review you'll notice I haven't mentioned zombies, mermaids or Spaniards yet. Here's the deal. In order: Blackbeard has a few crew members that keep everyone in line. These crew members have been "zombified" as one sailor puts it. They're just big, muscled guys with deformed faces. Mermaids: one of the catches to the Fountain of Youth is that in order to receive life, there are two chalices that must be filled with water from the fountain, but one chalice must also contain a mermaid's tear...ok. The chalices have to be retrieved from the last group in my title, the Spaniards. Oh yeah, they also are racing to the Fountain of Youth, but for different reasons than the others. There is also a subplot involving a cleric on Blackbeard's ship and a mermaid. Here's a hint as to the nature of the subplot: what do you do when Elizabeth and William are no longer in the picture?

If nothing else I will say that this movie showed an original interpretation of mermaids. Never in my life have I seen carnivorous, vampire-toothed mermaids that eat men right after seducing them with song.

Overall, the movie was disappointing. The performances were just as they needed to be, but the story wasn't...again. Not that it matters but here's my advice: make a prequel. When I first heard that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom weren't returning and that the plot would focus more on Jack and Barbossa, I thought that's what was happening. It should have happened. I think there is a great movie to be made about Jack being the Captain of the Black Pearl and the mutiny lead by his first mate, Barbossa. Maybe we'll see that film one day. I hope so. The Pirates films have always been guilty pleasures of mine. I know deep down that they're not great films, but the characters are fun to watch. While this movie was disappointing, I'm still glad I saw it. It gets better as it goes along, and the end isn't bad. They left it wide open for a fifth Pirates and I'm confident one will be on the horizon. Maybe 5th time's the charm.

L.A. Noire DLC Dated- The Nicholson Electroplating Arson Case

Developer Rockstar Games has given a release date for the very first DLC for L.A. Noire, "The Nicholson Electroplating Arson Case".

If you were within the first 16 purchasers of LA Noire at the Best Buy Midnight release Monday, you should have already recieved a free code for the DLC, which is scheduled to launch on June 21st.

Team Bondi has stated that this is first in a long line of DLC for the title, and that new Crime Desks, "Fraud", and "Burglary" will soon be added.

Be on the look out for a LA Noire review soon for me, for a Film Noire buffs point of view. Soon as I stop being busy and pick it up.

Microsoft announced yesterday that it is giving away FREE Xbox 360's to students that purchase select Windows PC's priced at over $700, for one of the participating retailers, including:

Dell.com

HP.com

and the Official Microsoft Store

You also need a ".EDU" email address, and proof you are a current student.

Paypal now on XBOX Marketplace

Latest Xbox 360 firmware update will alow Xbox 360 owners to purchase things with PayPal on the Xbox Marketplace, as a permanate alternative payment option. This change comes in affect today. This feature is available to all US users, and some International users.

This is a neat addition to the XBLM because the ability to sell on sites like EBAY, funnel the money towards your PayPal account, and then pay for XBL games from there.

I hope Playstation adopts this before the PS4...

Playstation Network UPDATE 5-20-11

Sony sent an email out to Developers and other outlets stating that they plan to have the Playstation Store up by May 21st.

They also plan to update the store several times a week, to make up for the content that was scheduled for relase, but wasnt. Content scheduled for release April 26th will be included in the first update, and three days after that, we will have the games that should have came out May 3rd.

Everything else (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) should go live on May 31st, and June 3rd.

The "Hangover" Franchise set to be a Trilogy

Director Todd Phillips says the after the Hangover: Part II, releases on May 27th, there will be one more Hangover film starring the same cast to conclude the story.

Phillips states in a Comingsoon interview, "Obviously we always envisioned it as a trilogy. The third would be very much a finale and an ending.

The director goes on to clarify, "I haven't discussed it with these actors yet. [It would] not follow the same template, but is very much a new idea." I'm not sure exactly what kind of new idea he'll bring to the table, but considering the second one doesn't look like a far cry from the first film, I can't imagine it would be a drastic departure from what fans have come to expect. Of course, many people will be wondering where the Wolf Pack would end up after Vegas and Bangkok turn into disaster trips. Phillips says, "As far as where it takes place. I'm very open. It'll be like being on the Olympic committee, being pitched and presented cities, flown around with wine and women and bribes."
